SHIRODHARA
Shiro means head and Dhara means stream. Ayurveda considers the human body as an inverted tree. The head of the human body is considered to be the root of this tree. The central portion made up of the thorax and abdomen is the trunk and the limbs are considered to be the branches. Just like the roots nurture a tree, our head is the operational center of the entire body. For this reason, the head is called Uttamanga - the best organ in our body. Shirodhara is a specialised Ayurvedic treatment designed specifically for this purpose, to nourish the head. Warm oil (or other liquid) is poured in a continuous stream over the forehead, an area where nerves are highly concentrated. The oil saturates the forehead and scalp and penetrates into the nervous system sending the client into a deep state of relaxation. It soothes the mind and relaxes the body. It has a profound effect on the nervous system, bringing about neurophysiological harmony. It induces a deep inner focus and calm. It gently stimulates the Ajna Chakra (Third Eye) and marma points on the forehead, producing a tranquil state of mental peace, sharpened focus, and freedom from sensory overload.
ABHYANGA
Deeply relaxing and rejuvenating, Ayurvedic oil massage involves the application and massage of warm, herb-infused, dosha-specific oil all over the body. Long repetitive massage strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints create heat to enable deeper absorption of the oil. The whole experience calms the nervous system and elicits a deep sense of grounding and relaxation.
Ayurveda explains that disease is caused by a build-up of toxins (Ama) in the body. Toxins are formed due to an impaired Agni (digestive fire) and an imbalance of Doshas. Abhyanga helps to balance the Doshas and expel toxins from the body. The warm oil penetrates through our skin to soften and loosen toxins stored in our joints, muscles, and organs. Toxins that are loosened through
Oleation travel through the circulatory system to the GI tract, where they are released from the body. It is recommended that people do their own Abhyanga at home daily as a routine to maintain good health.
