AKANKSHA KALRA

Yoga Teacher, Ayurvedic Practitioner
My journey into the world of health and wellbeing began in earnest to address the debilitating pain I experienced as the result of congenital fusion of vertebrae and scoliosis in my lumbar spine. I found solutions to my health problems in Yoga and Ayurveda and was able to reinstate balance in my body. Today, I live a healthy, pain free life without any western interventions.

Having experienced how effective Yoga and Ayurveda are at alleviating dis-ease, I am now devoted to spreading the word about these incredible life-changing healing modalities.

  • No. Vegetarianism is not a requirement to practice Ayurveda. In fact, Ayurveda teaches how to use meat as medicine e.g. in the case of severe debility and malnutrition, meat soups are prescribed to build the strength of the body.

Being vegetarian is the personal choice of the individual. A Vegetarian diet does however have many health benefits. Vegetarians usually have lower cholesterol levels and higher intake of Antioxidants in diet. This decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.

  • Yes – Ayurvedic supplements are 100% natural and made from medicinal herbs. Care must be taken on how to take them as even herbal supplements when taken unnecessarily or incorrectly can have side-effects. You should take them under the guidance of a qualified practitioner regarding the dose and time and method of taking herbs. Ayurvedic supplements should always be bought from a reputable supplier who maintains a high standard of quality control.

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises Ayurveda as an effective system of medicine.

  • Ayurveda and Yoga are sister sciences. They are complementary practices. Both practices being are born from the Vedic philosophy and are systems of wellness that aim to cultivate higher states of health and ultimately awareness. They both aim to enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Yoga focuses more on the mind and physiology aspects, whilst Ayurveda focuses more on physical health and pharmacology.

  • If you don't have any symptoms but are curious about using Ayurveda as a preventative medicine and way of living, then you can absolutely do that too! Ayurveda believes prevention is better than cure.
